Filipino Style Spaghetti

Posted by Jewel in , , , ,

This recipe is the modified version of a recipe given to me by my instructor in computer programming years ago.  This is very popular in parties, especially with kids and teenagers.  The sweet and spicy flavor in the sauce comes from the banana catsup, a product from the Philippines that continuously gain popularity around the world.  This recipe uses the spicy Jufran.  You can use the regular banana catsup if the spicy version is too strong.

Ingredients

1 pkg. spaghetti noodles
1 lg. onion, chopped
1 head garlic, minced
1 lg. red bell peppers, cut lengthwise
1 lb. ground beef
1 lb. ground pork
3 tablespoons of olive oil
1 pkg. hotdogs, diagonally sliced
1 lg. can of crushed tomatoes
1 sm bottle of spicy Jufran (Banana catsup, available in Oriental stores)
1 ladel each of patis (fish sauce) and toyo (soy sauce)
1 laurel leaf (bay leaf)
 1/2 cup grated cheddar cheese
 salt and pepper

Procedure :
  • Cook spaghetti noodles according to package instructions.
  • In a sauce pan or wok, saute garlic and onions in oil. Brown the garlic & caramelize the onions.
  • Brown the ground beef, ground pork and then, add laurel leaves, bell pepper. Cover until the pork & beef are sufficiently cooked. Make sure there’s no liquid left in the pan or wok.
  • Add the crushed tomatoes jufran, salt and pepper to taste then let simmer for another 10 minutes
  • Add hotdogs. Continue to simmer for an additional 5 minutes.
  • Serve with the cooked spaghetti noodles and grated cheese on top.

You can also:

  • Cook the hotdogs in oil first before cooking the sauce.
  • After the sauce is cooked, mix in the spaghetti & put in a baking dish with cheddar cheese on top. Finalize in a 325 degree oven for 10 minutes.
